What is a BAI file

BAI files mostly belong to BAI2Win. BAI files are used mainly in two separate fields. In about half of the cases, a BAI file is a bank account statement produced by BAI2Win. This file contains banking transactions and account balances, and it follows a specific format used to exchange financial information between banks and financial software.
In another major use, a BAI file is an index file for BAM files. These index files are created by SAMtools to allow fast access to the data in large BAM (Binary Alignment Map) files used in genomic sequencing. You can learn more about BAM indexing on the HTSlib website.
A very small portion of BAI files are Build2Win Add-In packages packaged as ZIP archives.

How to open a BAI file

You need a suitable software like BAI2Win to open a BAI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BAI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BAI file directly in the browser:. BAI file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the BAI files:

The file type with the extension 'BAI' is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all BAI files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "01," at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 10 KB in size and range from 820 bytes to 90 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Examples of file names are CAD - BAI Previous day _20180601.bai or USD - BAI Previous day_20180601.bai. Such files are related to report, previous, ddatransactions, checking, reconciliation, transactions, demand, baireport and accstmt.
• 40% of all BAI files belong to BAM Index. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. BAI files can be up to 9 MB in size, but are often around 360 bytes - 6 MB. Files like these are sometimes connected to data, sorted, galaxy, reads, mapped and aligned.
