Opening BDR Files
The BDR file type is primarily associated with Microsoft Word.
What is a BDR file?
Microsoft Word Border File:
These files store border designs used in document formatting. They are created by Microsoft Word or related programs (such as Microsoft Picture It! Border and PrintMaster) and are used to add design elements to page layouts.
Mercury Marine Boat Data File:
Some BDR files contain boat data. In these instances, the files store diagnostic or navigational information. They are formatted with .NET and used by Mercury Marine VesselView Mobile and the Mercury Marine Diagnostic System. More details are available on the Mercury Marine page.
Microsoft Exchange Bounced Email Data File:
Other BDR files log bounced email messages. These are used within Microsoft Exchange Server environments and are sometimes handled with BDRSuite, capturing data on email delivery issues.
Fiber Optic Test Data File:
A few BDR files record fiber optic test results. They contain measurement data from optical time domain reflectometers and are associated with tools such as VeEX Fiberizer.
How to Open and View BDR Files:
How to open BDR files

- Publisher (Border) by Microsoft CorporationMicrosoft Office Publisher helps you create, personalize, and share a wide range of publications and marketing materials. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 58 54 01 00, ASCII: XT .
BDR file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the BDR files comes to the following conclusion:
BDR is not a common file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 45% of all BDR files are Microsoft Border art files. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. BDR files are between 14 KB and 50 KB in size. The file type is very old and rarely used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Apples, Birds in Flight, Heart Balloon, Party Favor and Party Glass. Some examples of file names are MSART1.BDR or MSART2.BDR.
- 15% of all BDR files use the popular .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are not plain text files, so they also contain binary data. The files are 600 KB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The keywords :Mercury.G3.Features.ModuleData.Bdr.File.IO.DTOs.FileHeader, @Bdr, BdrFileIO, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null and Version are typical for these files. Such files are related to verado.
The remaining 40% of all BDR files are different files with different signatures. Files like these are sometimes linked to paramez. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your BDR file!

How to solve problems with BDR files
- Associate the BDR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest BDR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Word update.
- To make sure that your BDR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BDR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
