What is a BFC file?

BFC files mostly belong to Brainfuck Compiler. The BFC file is a file that can serve different purposes depending on its origin and how it was created.
If it is used as a Brainfuck code file, it contains minimal, esoteric instructions for a Brainfuck Compiler. In some cases, this file is wrapped as a zipped package that may include Beatmania IIDX charts associated with BFCrypt.

There is also a variant where a BFC file is actually a PNG image file. Such files are used in gaming contexts like Battle for Wesnoth and as compressed graphical assets in Blockland.

How can I open a BFC file?

You need a suitable software like Brainfuck Compiler to open a BFC file. BFC file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the BFC files produces the following result:

The BFC file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all BFC files start with the bytes BFC, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 92 KB in size and range from 5 KB to 240 KB. It is a modern file type. The file name 01-01.bfc or 05-04.bfc is typical for these files.
• 30% of all BFC files have the same signature 00 14 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 4 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. FG<H/6.=072:I@8?1>C4-5DA;B39E. The file name fontconfig.bfc or fontconfig.98.bfc is characteristic of these files.
