What is a BML file?

BML files mostly belong to BeamNG.drive. BML files are used to store different types of data, and their content depends on the software that created them. In one common use, a Game Behavior Markup Language file for BeamNG.drive defines game physics, vehicle dynamics, and simulation parameters.

How do you open BML files?

You need a suitable software like BeamNG.drive to open a BML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit BML files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. The BML file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

30% of all BML files start with the magic bytes xml, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. BML files can be up to 70 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 8 KB. The file type is relatively new. Some examples of file names are ALIENCONFIGS.BML or ALIEN.BML. Files like these have the following tags: normal, flamethrower, pistol and player.
6% of all BML files use the same file format, which have the signature 01 09 00 00 00 45 00 66. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 6 KB in size and range from 550 bytes to 12 KB. The files contain the following words: EffectSet, absolutePath, true and Z:/Project_ax/_Character/PC/Dragon_W/6.GrannyData/Drag. Files like these have the following tags: dragon, miedoverde, strengthen and weapon.

All other BML files (64%) have no uniform format, often, for example, data. The category is level, easy, fortress, design, string, animation, costume, cheats, gfxgem, cheat, codes, snake or item.
