What is a BR file?

BR files mostly belong to Brotli. BR files do not refer to a single file type. In many cases these files are Brotli compressed data files. They use the Brotli algorithm to reduce file size for faster data delivery.
A BR file may also be a configuration file used by B&R Automation Studio to store settings and project data for automation systems.
Other uses include Unity bundle resources and compressed web data, which are common in game assets and WebAssembly files. There are even rare cases where BR files hold Bink video data or EEG readings.

To open a BR file, you must first identify its source. If it is a Brotli compressed file, a Brotli decompression tool or a modern web browser can often decompress it. For B&R configuration files, the corresponding Automation Studio application is needed.

How do you open BR files?

You need a suitable software like Brotli to open a BR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BR file directly in the browser:. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the BR files is as follows:

The BR file extension is quite common and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 30% of all BR files have the same signature CF FF. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 630 MB with most files being between 48 MB and 1 GB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. The file name system.new.dat.br or vendor.new.dat.br is typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to chromium.
• 20% of all BR files start with the magic bytes CB FF, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 4 MB to 1 GB in size, with a median of 520 MB. A usual file name is system.new.dat.br or vendor.new.dat.br. Such files are related to data.
