Opening BTX Files
The BTX file type is primarily associated with Bluebeam Revu.
What is a BTX file?
In addition, some BTX files serve as Smart Notebook files used by interactive whiteboard software; these are packaged with a ZIP compression scheme and may also be known as MIMIO Studio notebook files.
Other BTX files are found in the game development arena. They work as containers for texture data that can appear in several forms such as binary texture files, game texture containers, or even compressed textures (for example, formats related to DDS1, Sega Saturn, or Khronos standards).
- Bluebeam Revu toolset: Text-based configuration files that store markup tools for PDF workflows. More details can be found at Bluebeam.
- Smart Notebook files: ZIP-compressed archives used by digital notebook software; see details at Smarttech.
- Game texture files: Binary or compressed files carrying texture data for games. Tools like BtxEditor or OpenIV are used here, with additional context available at OpenIV and resources on Khronos standards.
FilExt.com tips: This single extension is shared among unrelated file types. To open a BTX file, first identify its origin. If it appears to be human-readable text, it is likely a Bluebeam toolset file and should be opened with Bluebeam Revu. If it is compressed, it may belong to the Smart Notebook family, while binary data usually relates to game textures.
How to open a BTX file
You need a suitable software like Bluebeam Revu to open a BTX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BTX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BTX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

BTX format details:
To view or edit BTX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the BTX files comes to the following conclusion:
An BTX file is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all BTX files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 8 KB to 630 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <BluebeamRevuToolSet Version="1">, Title, <ToolChestItem Version="1"> and Name. Such BTX files store data about tools, electrical, symbols, stamps, fire, accessories, toolbox, review and steel.
- 25% of all BTX files use the ZIP algorithm, i.e. a BTX file contains several compressed files. Most often they are 4 to 8 compressed files. File names inside are always manifest.xml, manifest.xml-, page1.jlparrec-, page1.jlrec, page1.jlrec-ec-, page1.svg, page1.svg-c-ec-, preview.png and preview.png-ec-. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. Most of these files are 40 KB to 720 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as manifest.xml.
The remaining 40% of all BTX files are files with no common format, the following 6 formats exist: DB/TextWorks Database Term and Word Index, SHTX and BCDF. These files are often connected to mmodel, cutin, font or body. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your BTX file!
Technical Data for BTX File Extension
a btx configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BTX files
- Associate the BTX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest BTX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Bluebeam Revu update.
- To make sure that your BTX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BTX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
