What is a BXL file?

BXL files mostly belong to Free Reader by Ultra Librarian. BXL (Binary Exchange Language) is a vendor neutral computer-aided design (CAD) data storage and exchange format developed by Ultra Librarian. This file may be used to store 2D/3D symbols, footprint, and 3D models but its primary use case is the storage of electronic circuit schematics. Ultra Librarian computer-aided design programs such as Ultra Librarian Desktop and Free Reader are respectively the primary programs for authoring and viewing CAD data in BXL format.

BXL files can originate from various applications and aren't universally openable by standard software.

1. Identify the Source: If received from an electronics engineer or PCB designer, it is likely 2D/3D CAD data used for circuit board design.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a text or hex editor to inspect the first few bytes:
   • "PK" indicates a zipped archive.
   • Readable XML or plain text suggests a structured CAD format.
3. Use the Original Software: Opening the file usually requires the original program; try Ultra Librarian's Free Reader, Altium Designer, or simply ask the sender if you are unsure.
