What is a CDG file?

CDG files mostly belong to VLC by VideoLAN. Files with CDG filename extension typically contain music graphics, lyrics, and synchronization data stored in CD+G (Compact Disc plus Graphics) format which is mainly used by karaoke discs. The graphics and lyrics in these karaoke discs are stored in the unused sub channel of the tracks in the disc. Computer programs such as DART Karaoke Studio may be used to create karaoke tracks using CD+G format. Karaoke tracks that are ripped onto a computer are typically compressed in MP3+G file format. The graphics, lyrics, and synchronization data of these ripped tracks are also stored in CDG files. Class diagrams created with NetBeans easyUML plugin are saved in a different kind of CDG file. These class diagrams are saved in the Unified Modeling Language (UML) used to generate Java code from a drag-and-drop visual editor. The contents of CDG class diagram files are stored in XML format.

How to open a CDG file

You need a suitable software like VLC to open a CDG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CDG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CDG file directly in the browser:. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 3 KB to 31 KB. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, ClassDiagramComponents, ClassDiagram name, Class name, xPosition, yPosition and package="" visibility="public". An example of a file name is Banking Management System 2020.06.01 10-30.cdg or uml.cdg. Such files sometimes refer to banking, management, system and java.
9% of all CDG files start with the bytes 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 C0 80 80 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 1.2 MB and 1.7 MB in size. Such CDG files store data about person-related data.

How to solve problems with CDG files

Associate the CDG file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open lyrics and synchronization data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CDG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the VideoLAN manufacturer website after an available VLC update.
