Opening CX Files
The CX file type is primarily associated with Cytoscape.
What is a CX file?
How can I open a CX file?
You need a suitable software like Cytoscape to open a CX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Cytoscape
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CX files are often referred to as Cytoscape data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- CodeMapper Script
CX file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the CX files is as follows:
The CX file extension is rather rarely used and includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all CX files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. CX files are between 67 KB and 45 MB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 281474976710655, elementCount, longNumber, metaData, name, numberVerification, version, properties, consistencyGroup, nodes and provenanceHistory. HEK293T_SARS-CoV-2.cx is a typical file name. Such files are related to sars, signaling, network, sapiens, interactions, human, homo, mediated, pathway, protein, events and imex.
- 20% of all CX files use the ZIP format, that is, a CX file includes multiple compressed files. A typical number of included files is 5. File names are e.g. ExportedObjects.txt, Header.txt, OriginalOids.txt and SchemaExcerpt.txt. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 760 KB. The keywords ExportedObjects.txt are typical for these files.
All the rest of the CX files (45%) have different formats, the following 3 formats exist: CALCULATORX. Often described as bcres, logins, share, free, skin or export. If you want to find out which format your CX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cx file to analyze".

How to solve problems with CX files
- Associate the CX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Cytoscape update.
- To make sure that your CX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
