What is a DDI file?

DDI files mostly belong to VOCALOID5.

The DDI file can mean different things in different environments. It may be a file that holds a Vocaloid voice bank used with VOCALOID5, where it stores voice data for singing synthesis.
It is also seen as a disk image file (often compressed), used by tools like DiskDupe or ImgBurn. Other uses include:

• Game Maker Studio image files used in game asset management.
• Device Driver Image files for installing system drivers.
• Data Documentation Initiative XML files (UTF-8 encoded) for recording research metadata, supported by the DDI Alliance.
• 3D image format files, sometimes encrypted, created by Daz Studio (Daz 3D).
• Data Definition Interface files used as part of disk image data workflows.

How to open a DDI file

You need a suitable software like VOCALOID5 to open a DDI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the DDI files is as follows:

The DDI file extension is quite common and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in DDI files:

• 20% of all DDI files internally utilize the MKV file format. MKV is short for Matroska Multimedia Container. It can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar to AVI, MP4, or ASF, but is entirely open in specification and consisting of open source software. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. DDI files are between 89 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. webmB and libwebm-0. A common filename is -2.ddi or AV.ddi.
• 15% of all DDI files start with the bytes 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 44 42 53 65 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 660 KB to 3 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DBSe and PHDC. MIKU_V4_English.ddi or Fukase_J_Normal.ddi is a typical file name. Such DDI files store data about miku, english, evec, original, fukase and normal.

All the rest of the DDI files (65%) have different formats, the following 18 formats can be found: DiskDupe Disk Image, DiskDupe 5, DiskDupe/MSD Disk Image, XML, dtU, Overlay and FILES. Files like these are sometimes linked to oclock, acme, bimbo, msdos, classroom, megpoid, shadows, alley, cyber, kaito, power or piko.
