What is a DIRECTORY file?

DIRECTORY files mostly belong to KDE by KDE e.V. DIRECTORY is the file extension for a K Desktop Environment (KDE) folder view properties file. K Desktop Environment is a series of free, open-source desktop environments for Unix-like operating systems. It provide users a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows them to use Unix-like operating systems just like a GUI-based operating system. The K Desktop Environment GUI is equipped with all the tools typically used by the common user, including a file manager, window manager, help tool and system configuration tool. The DIRECTORY file format is used to store the folder viewing settings for a directory in K Desktop Environment. These settings include icon positions and view mode (icon, list, etc.). DIRECTORY files are automatically generated when the view settings of a folder are modified. These files are hidden by default.

How to open a DIRECTORY file

You need a suitable software like KDE to open a DIRECTORY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DIRECTORY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DIRECTORY file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
