What is a DISK file?

DISK files mostly belong to Wubi by Wubi Developers. A DISK file is a loopmounted hard disk image on which Wubi installs Ubuntu-based Linux distributions such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, UbuntuStudio, and Edubuntu. Wubi is a Windows application used to install Ubuntu from within Windows. Instead of creating a separate partition for Ubuntu, Wubi creates a virtual hard disk (\ubuntu\disks\root.disk) which is added to the boot menu. This is done to prevent data loss (due to partitioning errors). An operating system installed in such a DISK file is not a virtual machine. Wubi adds such operating systems to Windows boot menu.

How to open DISK files

You need a suitable software like Wubi to open a DISK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DISK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DISK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with DISK files

  • Associate the DISK file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest DISK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Wubi Developers manufacturer website after an available Wubi update.
  • To make sure that your DISK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
