Opening DMN Files
The DMN file type is primarily associated with Camunda Modeler.
What is a DMN file
This file type is used to define and execute decision logic within business process management systems. It helps model decision tables and rule flows clearly and in a standardized way.
FilExt.com note: The file serves as an internal representation of decision logic. Professional tools are recommended to open, view, and edit DMN files for precise control over business rules.

DMN file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the DMN files comes to the following conclusion:
The DMN file extension is not found very often and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 90% of all DMN files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. DMN files can be up to 310 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 46 KB. The file type was created recently. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, dmndi, name, <definitions xmlns="http://www.omg.org/spec/DMN/20151101/dmn.xsd", http://camunda.org/schema/1.0/, namespace and <definitions xmlns="https://www.omg.org/spec/DMN/20191111/MODEL/". Some examples of file names are diagram.dmn. Such DMN files store data about decision, simulation, rule, ruleadbadditionstp, validation, rules, risk and type.
- 3% of all DMN files start with the bytes "MANUAL SAMPLE DATA" "Model Serial No.:","S5, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 870 bytes.
The remaining 7% of all DMN files are files with no common format. Sometimes used for financial or payment. Just click the "Choose your .dmn file to view" button on this page to find out what your DMN file is.
