What is a DMW file?

DMW files mostly belong to JetBrains Rider. DMW files have two distinct uses. In many cases, they are memory snapshots created by JetBrains tools. These files use the ZIP format to store runtime memory profiles captured during software execution.

This snapshot is used by JetBrains Rider and dotMemory to help developers find performance issues and memory leaks.

In other cases, the same extension identifies files generated by DigitalMicrograph software. These files hold data from electron microscopy, which is used for detailed imaging analysis.

How to open DMW files

You need a suitable software like JetBrains Rider to open a DMW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DMW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DMW file directly in the browser:. DMW file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the DMW files:

DMW is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in DMW files:

• 35% of all DMW files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one DMW file. Such a ZIP file contains 3 to 50 files with names like workspace.idx, workspace.json and \ProfilingData\. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 3 MB to 300 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as workspace.json. Such DMW files store data about snapshot, service, attach, dotnet and leak.
• 20% of all DMW files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. DMW files are between 820 bytes and 4 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: File count, File name 0 and File name 1. These files are often associated with stem.
