Opening a DRAW File
The DRAW file type is primarily associated with OpenOffice Draw.
What is a DRAW file?
For instance, some DRAW files contain embroidery designs used by machines like the Bernina Artista 730 or designs created with Wilcom Embroidery Studio. In these cases the file holds stitch patterns and design data in a structure such as a Microsoft Compound file.
Other DRAW files are used in technical and diagram applications. They can hold data for coordinate measuring machines or be simple diagram files saved in text-based formats like JSON, as seen with tools such as Excalidraw or those generated by draw.io.
There are also cases where DRAW files are produced by drawing applications like OpenOffice Draw, and these may sometimes be imported or edited in vector graphic tools like CorelDRAW.
- Embroidery Use: Designs show stitching paths and embroidery machine instructions.
- Technical Drawings: Files store CAD-like data and measurements.
- Diagrams & Schematics: They hold vector–based elements created by diagramming tools.
Opening and viewing these files:
FilExt.com notes: Identify which tool originally created the file. For example, use dedicated embroidery software (Bernina Artista or Wilcom Embroidery Studio) for embroidery designs, or try OpenOffice Draw, Excalidraw, or draw.io for diagrams and technical drawings. Some files may open as text (JSON), while others are binary due to the Microsoft Compound format.
How do you open DRAW files?
You need a suitable software like OpenOffice Draw to open a DRAW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DRAW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DRAW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DRAW file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the DRAW files produces the following result:
An DRAW file is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 20% of all DRAW files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 DA 8E B6 68 89 05 00" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 73 KB. It is a modern file type. The following filename is common: [New 1].Draw. These files can be linked to logo, and usually contain person-related data.
- 20% of all DRAW files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The file contains sections that are named something like Contents, Thumbnail, SummaryInformation and Embedding 1. The average file size is 240 KB with most files being between 57 KB and 1 MB in size. These files are attributed to applique, umbrella and flower.
All other DRAW files (60%) have no uniform format, often, for example, JSON, XML, CPCDbc and mxfile. These files are often connected to baseplate, diagram, leitz, back or tesa. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DRAW file!
Technical Data for DRAW File Extension
