The DTP file type is primarily associated with Publish-It!.
What is a DTP file?
- Main Use: Publish-iT is a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) desktop publishing application which also has word-processing and graphics options. Publish-iT stores the page layout data that is used for publishing a particular document in a dedicated DTP file. The settings stored in these DTP files consist of text, images, stylized page formatting. These DTP settings are useful in publishing documents as newsletters, brochures, or other standard printable modes. The DTP page layout files can be converted into the widely supported PDF format using Publish-iT software.
- Other Uses: DTP file extension is also used to store data files created using JetBrains dotTrace, an application utilized for collecting and analyzing performance-related data about .NET and .NET Core applications. These DTP files store profile snapshot data, which is a summary of the performance and concurrency information collected by dotTrace and is useful in carrying out the analysis of the application's performance. SecurDesk!, a program used for creating a custom desktop environment for any Microsoft Windows version also uses DTP files. ProComm, a terminal emulation software and file transfer application by Symantec Corporation also uses DTP files to store program patches. Page Express, an desktop publishing application developed by Networked Picture Systems also uses DTP files for publishing documents.

DTP file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the DTP files produces the following result:
The DTP extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in DTP files are:
- 25% of all DTP files belong to Timeworks Publisher/Publish It. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 17 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 190 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DTPI, FTAB and Sans. These files are attributed to cptren and blin.
- 25% of all DTP files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 31 KB to 14 MB. These files are attributed to page, and have often person-related content.
All other DTP files (50%) have no consistent format, often e.g. ZIP, XML, STOR and GDTPF. The category is resource, radio, data, fotoboek, section, plugin, travel, album or easy. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DTP file!
