What is an EPH file?

EPH files mostly belong to GNSS Tools. EPH files are ephemeris data files that store satellite orbital information used in navigation systems. They are not simple text files but contain precise data needed to compute satellite positions.

How do you open EPH files?

To find out what program is needed to open EPH files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the EPH files comes to the following conclusion:

The EPH file extension is rather rarely used and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in EPH files:

35% of all EPH files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "EPHE" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. EPH files can be up to 810 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 63 KB. The file type was created recently. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. EPHE, vmagf, JSON, STAR, {"children_mask": 15} and types. Npix0.eph or Npix7.eph is a typical file name. These files are often associated with ephemeris.
15% of all EPH files start with the bytes BM crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. EPH files are between 50 KB and 190 KB in size.
