Opening an EPH File

The EPH file type is primarily associated with GNSS Tools.

EPHFile Extension EPH
File extension: EPH
File type:  data file

What is an EPH file?

EPH files mostly belong to GNSS Tools. EPH files are ephemeris data files that store satellite orbital information used in navigation systems. They are not simple text files but contain precise data needed to compute satellite positions.
These files are used in two prominent ways:
  • Standard Ephemeris Data: Provided by companies like MALO, this version gives the basic information to determine satellite orbits.
  • Precise GNSS Ephemeris: Offered by EPOS, this file type is used in systems requiring high accuracy and is linked with platforms such as GFLOPS.
  • FilExt.com note: To view an EPH file, use specialized GNSS or satellite navigation software that can interpret the file's data structure. Some applications also allow you to convert the data to a plain text format for easier review.

How do you open EPH files?

You need a suitable software like GNSS Tools to open an EPH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert EPH files:

    1. GNSS Tools
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. EPH files are often referred to as GNSS Tools data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. GPS Pathfinder Office (Ephemeris File) by Trinble Navigation Limited
The GPS Pathfinder Office software enables you to pre-plan field sessions. The data dictionary editor creates custom pick-lists, automatic repeat feature, and numeric values. In the field, the data dictionary prompts the field crew to enter specific information for data integrity and compatibility with your GIS or database. Ephemeris files contain information on the exact location and health of GPS satellites. They can be transferred from GPS receivers.
    3. NOAA Post-fit GPS Orbit Data

How to solve problems with EPH files

    • Associate the EPH file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest EPH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available GNSS Tools update.
    • To make sure that your EPH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
