What is an EPK file?

EPK files mostly belong to epk2extract by OpenLGTV. An EPK file is an AES-encrypted firmware package for LG and Hisense smart TVs. It usually contains a firmware update which improves the performance of a smart TV set, applies bug fixes, or introduces new features. Smart TVs install an EPK file behind the scenes. They can be downloaded by going to Menu > System Settings > About > System Updates > Check Now. epk2extract is an open source tool used to legally extract, reverse engineer, and research an EPK firmware package. EPK is also the filename extension of an encrypted package of game resources used by Metin2 video game.

How to open an EPK file

You need a suitable software like epk2extract to open an EPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPK file directly in the browser:. EPK file extension format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the EPK files produces the following result:

The EPK extension is very commonly found and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all EPK files are Eaglercraft Package files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 470 KB to 12 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The keywords EAGPKG$$, ver2.0, Eagler EPK v2, export, world name, file-type, 0HEAD and world188 are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are New World.epk or assets.epk. Such EPK files store data about world, backup, survival, eaglercraftx, hardcore, minecraft, craft, nebula, yeeish, tech, vigg, yigg and man.
• 15% of all EPK files start with the bytes MC, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 450 KB to 71 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: MCOZ. The file name root.epk or locale_tr.epk is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to locale, item, patch, maps, monster, effect, sound and icon.

All the rest of the EPK files (55%) have different formats, often e.g. LG EPK v1 firmware package, ZIP, 7z, JPG, epak, MIPX, AAF, ScriptType, EQPK, ojt, NAME and YnO. They are often associated with secured, prodkey, starfish, atsc, global or build.
