What is an EPT file?

EPT files mostly belong to FT_Prog. EPT files are not a single standard format but a group of vendor‐specific files used in different technical fields.
For example, one common use is as an FTDI EEPROM configuration file that stores device settings. This file is created and managed with tools like FT_Prog, and you can find more details at the FTDI website.
Other cases include:

Ciena WaveLogic network design file: This form of EPT uses a ZIP structure to store network planning data and is handled by software such as Ciena Network Planner or similar tools.

ELS Parameter File: Built on a .NET framework, it holds system or measurement parameters. It is used in setups like those for an Anton Paar Electrokinetic Analyzer paired with instruments such as the Zetasizer Nano.

EPLAN project file: An XML-based file used in electrical project planning with EPLAN Electric P8. It organizes project data and design details.

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file: Sometimes the extension is applied to files containing EPS data for vector-based images, viewable with EPS Viewer.

Encrypted PDF file: In other cases, EPT is used to store PDFs with encryption features; these are associated with products like E-Prime Go and may also tie to Kingsoft and EPSON software.

Each EPT file relies on its origin; that is, the software that created it determines the internal format and function.

How to open an EPT file

You need a suitable software like FT_Prog to open an EPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPT file directly in the browser:. How to convert an EPT file to JPG, PDF, HTML, DOC, ...

EPT file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the EPT files is as follows:

The EPT file extension is not found very often and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all EPT files are associated with EEPROM Template files, which internally utilize the well-known config format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The file size is in the range of 1.2 KB to 1.6 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The files contain the following words: Prefix, [Basic Details], [USB Power Options], USB Serial Number Control, Bus Powered=1, Self Powered=0, USB VID=0403, Device Type=6, USB PID=6001, VID PID Type=0, Use Fixed Seri and Max Bus Power=90. A common filename is VAG CAN-K V2.5_OK-OK.ORI.EPT or XDS100v2.ept. These files can be linked to ftdi and mprog.
• 10% of all EPT files use ZIP compression, i.e. an EPT file contains several compressed files. Most often they are 1 to 4 compressed files. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The file size is in the range of 12 KB to 1 MB.

All other EPT files (65%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Encapsulated PostScript binary, XML, .NET and VDLJxzaPRxxqWqdxVf. Files like these are sometimes linked to capt, zeta, geservice or punkty.
