What is an EPUB file

EPUB files mostly belong to Apple Books by Apple. An EPUB file is an e-book saved in Electronic Publication format. A single EPUB file is actually a ZIP-compressed archive with a different filename extension. It contains data encoded using Open Packaging Format, Open Container Format, and Open Publication Structure Specification. Such data includes one or more XHTML documents, images, and metadata which can be parsed and rendered by e-book readers such as Apple Books, Calibre, and Digital Editions. An XML file which describes all data in the e-book is also saved as part of the archive. The EPUB standard is defined and published by the International Digital Publishing Forum.

How to open EPUB files

You need a suitable software like Apple Books to open an EPUB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPUB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPUB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the EPUB files:

EPUB is one of the most common file extensions and primarily uses a special format that can be read by various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in EPUB files:

The remaining 2% of all EPUB files are different files with different signatures. These files are often connected to power, what, world, science, complete or love. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your EPUB file!
