• LimeSurvey Survey Definition: This version is stored as a compressed ZIP archive. It holds survey settings, questions, and design information used by the EU Survey system.
• EC Survey Data File: In some cases, the file is a Java serialized object containing survey data. This type typically requires a Java Runtime Environment. More details can be found at Eurostat Database.
• Eurosat Firmware Upgrade: A few EUS files are used to upgrade firmware for Eurosat Decoder devices. They do not use ZIP or Java serialization.

How can I open an EUS file?

You need a suitable software like LimeSurvey to open an EUS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. EUS file extension format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the EUS files:

EUS is not a common file extension and mainly uses a defined EUS format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 75% of all EUS files internally use the ZIP format, the EUS file contains a number of compressed files. An EUS file can contain up to 8 files (mostly 3 - 6). File names inside are always info.txt, survey-active.eus, survey.eus, translations-active.eus and translations.eus. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. EUS files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 16 KB - 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: survey.eus and info.txt=. Files like these have the following tags: survey, compeu, procur, stakeholders and standard.
• 15% of all EUS files save the data in Java file format. This format is used to save Java objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a Java object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are not plain text files, so they also contain binary data. Most of these files are 16 KB to 170 KB in size. The files contain the following words: !com.ec.survey.model.survey.Survey, DBVersionZ, accessResultsRightsZ, automaticPublishingZ, canCreateSurveysZ, captchaZ, changeContributionI, compulsoryStyleZ and downloadContributionZ. The file name survey.eus or survey-active.eus is typical for these files. These files can be linked to active and translations.
