What is an EVI file

EVI files mostly belong to Evidence Player. Encrypted video files and X-ray image files share the EVI extension.

How to open EVI files

You need a suitable software like Evidence Player to open an EVI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EVI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EVI file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the EVI files comes to the following conclusion:

The file type with the extension 'EVI' mainly uses a defined EVI format. The following file formats are most commonly found in EVI files:

• 75% of all EVI files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "0F 00 FF FF 00 01 00 00 40" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 20 MB to 280 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Examples of file names are (2020-06-01 10-30 - 2020-06-01 10-30).evi. • 7% of all EVI files have the same signature PlainText_Header_Bytes. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 16 MB in size and range from 260 KB to 110 MB. The keywords First, Offset, PlainText_Header_Bytes 2048, ROI_X 0, ROI_Y 0, Width, between, iamges, images, Endianness Little-endian byte order, Image_Type Single, Height 64 and Image_Type 16-bit Unsigned are typical for these files.

The remaining 18% of all EVI files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats can be found: Image.
