What is a FAX file?
How to open FAX files
You need a suitable software like Photo Viewer to open a FAX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FAX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FAX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FAX files:
- Photo Viewer by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FAX files are often referred to as Photo Viewer raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- XnView (fax document) by XnSoftXnView is a general purpose file management software that allows users to view, organize, edit, or convert raster image files. It supports most image file formats including FAX files containing fax documents. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: TIFF
FAX file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the FAX files is as follows:
FAX is not a common file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all FAX files save the data in TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 27 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 310 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Files like these are sometimes connected to archived, data and mxof.
- 10% of all FAX files are based on the popular WordPerfect file format. WordPerfect is a word processor now owned by Corel and has a long history that began in the 1980s. It may contain formatted text, tables, charts, drawn objects, and images. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. FAX files are between 5 KB and 88 KB in size.
The remaining 25% of all FAX files are files with no common format, such as DOC. Often described as image or document. If you want to find out what your FAX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a fax fax document is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FAX files
- Associate the FAX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open fax documents. Because only the current version supports the latest FAX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Photo Viewer update.
- To make sure that your FAX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FAX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
