How to open an FDI file
You need a suitable software like FIVEC to open an FDI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FDI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FDI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FDI file format:
To view or edit FDI files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the FDI files looks like this:
FDI is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 45% of all FDI files are associated with Anex86 PC98 floppy image. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 1.2 MB and 1.2 MB in size. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. Some examples of file names are Disk01.fdi. These files are often associated with monogatari, shinkaron, okunen, fairytale, premium, redzone, akiko and reserve.
- 20% of all FDI files have the same signature SHOW_NODENAMES;. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 6 KB to 120 KB in size. The keywords NODES_PROPORTIONAL;TRUE, SHOW_ONLY_TORSO;FALSE, MIN_CIRC_RADIUS, SHOW_LINES;FALSE, SHOW_MEDIANS;TRUE, SHOW_CHARACTERS;FALSE, SHOW_MEDIAN_NAMES;TRUE, MAX_CIRC_RADIUS;50, SHOW_NODENAMES;TRUE and SHOW_NODENAMES;FALSE are typical for these files. A usual file name is gisaid_cov2020_sequencesMar03PlusPreviousPlusWuhan1MinusPangolin1-274MinusFlanks.fdi. These files can be linked to plus, sequences, pangolin, previous, flanks, gisaid and wuhan.
All other FDI files (35%) have no uniform format, such as Full Disk Image. Tagged as inspection, belloncho, network, summary, body or hard. If you want to find out what your FDI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with FDI files
- Associate the FDI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open disk image files. Because only the current version supports the latest FDI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available FIVEC update.
- To make sure that your FDI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FDI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
