What is a FOB file

FOB files mostly belong to Dynamics NAV by Microsoft. The FOB file extension is associated with Microsoft Dynamics Navy, previously known as Navision. This Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software uses FOB file extension for its Dynamic NAV object container files. The FOB files might also be described as Navision Attain Object files.

• Main Usage: Being Dynamic NAV object container files, the FOB files are binary files which store one or more objects used by Microsoft Dynamics NAV. These files may also contain tables, forms or other objects to be used by the application. The content of FOB files can be seen by using a text editor. One will find a header defining all objects under it.
• More Information: To export an object from the application a TXT file can be used in place of FOB file but while creating an object you cannot just import it via a TXT file. New standard objects can be created only by importing an FOB file.

How to open a FOB file

You need a suitable software like Dynamics NAV from Microsoft to open a FOB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The FOB file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in FOB files:

• 30% of all FOB files start with the magic bytes Table , which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. FOB files can be up to 310 MB in size, but are often around 7 KB - 4 MB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: Table and NAVW. Files like these are sometimes connected to objects, chapter and esker.
• 20% of all FOB files save the data in TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. FOB files can be up to 100 KB in size, but are often around 9 KB - 62 KB.
