FOD files mostly belong to LibreOffice Writer. FOD files can denote two distinct formats that share the same extension but differ in structure.

• Legal Document Format: These files use the Microsoft Compound system to store legal document data. In some cases they are saved as a Flat XML OpenDocument Format, which makes the content viewable and editable with programs like LibreOffice Writer.

How do you open FOD files?

FOD file extension format:

To find out what program is needed to open FOD files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The FOD file extension is rather rarely used and mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 85% of all FOD files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The file contains several sections which are named like DataStream, PropertyStream, SSStream, ScriptStream, TextStream and DanteStream. The files are on average 97 KB in size and range from 23 KB to 210 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Files like these are about originale, statuto, verbale, modifica, elenco, atto, preliminare and procura.
• 4% of all FOD files start with the bytes PSH crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. FOD files can be up to 1 GB in size, but are often around 75 MB - 1 GB. The following keywords are characteristic: ioy<. The following filename is common: lost.fod.
