What is an FPK file?

FPK files mostly belong to Modding tools. FPK files are container archives that bundle different data resources. Their structure depends on the software that created them.

Game Data Archives: A large share of FPK files are used to store game resources. For example, many are Fox Engine Package Files or are used with games such as Civilization V and Civilization IV. They sometimes appear with the label FPK Unreal Engine Package, as seen in several game data archives. More details can be found at the Civilization Games Wiki.

Form Data Files: Other FPK files hold form related data. Some use the Microsoft Compound format to save Formtracer measurement files or act as PerFORM Communicator form data files.

Compressed Archives & Multimedia: There are also instances where FPK files are compressed archives. For example, one uses the ZIP format to store a Face poser file from FaceGen Modeller (FaceGen), while other files use 7-Zip (7-Zip) or contain video data related to CRI Middleware.

How to open FPK files

You need a suitable software like Modding tools to open an FPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FPK file directly in the browser:. To find out what program is needed to open FPK files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the FPK files looks like this:

The FPK file extension is quite widespread and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 40% of all FPK files start with the magic bytes foxfpk, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 17 KB to 760 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. foxfpk, fmdl and p5?Khz. The file name face.fpk or boots.fpk is characteristic of these files. These files can be linked to ball, light, plparts, pitch, circleflag, common, flagarea and edit.
• 10% of all FPK files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The app name of an FPK file is Formtracepak or Formpak. The globally unique identifier of this file type is 5b630920-56ff-11cf-adaa-0080c81a6141. Sections and streams in the file have names like Contents, MeasData, SummaryInformation and Steps. The average file size is 480 KB with most files being between 180 KB and 1 MB in size. A usual file name is 1.FPK. These files are often associated with sample, side, profile, radius, proto, belt, lado and sept.

The remaining 50% of all FPK files are different files with different signatures, such as PerFORM Communicator File Packet, 7z, ZIP, GZIP, FPK, FLPK, OggS and PGD. Files like these are sometimes linked to data, textures, models, content, sound, hallway or normal.
