What is an FWD file

FWD files mostly belong to Engineering Apps. The FWD extension is not tied to one universal format but is used for several specialized data types.

Falling Weight Deflectometer Data: These files store pavement test measurements used in road construction and simulation. They often use the UTF-16 (LE) encoding and carry data from instruments that measure structural deflections.

HMI / Forward Engineering Data: In some cases the file is generated from Siemens HMI systems. It is used in industrial control and automation environments, sometimes labeled as a forward engineering data file.

Retaining Wall & Simulation Data: Some FWD files even include retaining wall design details or forward dynamics simulation data. A typical example is found in engineering software from Bentley (Bentley PLAXIS 3D) or Oasys Software (Oasys Software).

How to open an FWD file

You need a suitable software like Engineering Apps to open an FWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The FWD file extension is rather rarely used and includes many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

15% of all FWD files store the data in the UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 27 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 140 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IKUAB FWD FILE, HOperator and HRoad.
10% of all FWD files start with the bytes FmWr, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 480 MB with most files being between 1 MB and 1 GB in size. The keywords Adobe and FmWrARCD0163 are typical for these files. The following filename is common: arc.fwd or src.fwd.
