Opening an FWD File
The FWD file type is primarily associated with Engineering Apps.
What is an FWD file
How to open an FWD file
You need a suitable software like Engineering Apps to open an FWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FWD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FWD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FWD files:
- Engineering Apps
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FWD files are often referred to as Engineering Apps data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- IMail Server (Forwarded Mail) by Ipswitch, Inc.IMail Server is a scalable, standards-based (POP3/IMAP4/SMTP) E-mail server with protection from spam and viruses. This extension indicates forwarded messages.
- RollerCoaster Tycoon (Fireworks Display) by Atari
FWD file format:
To view or edit FWD files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the FWD files:
The FWD file extension is rather rarely used and includes many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all FWD files store the data in the UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 27 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 140 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IKUAB FWD FILE, HOperator and HRoad.
- 10% of all FWD files start with the bytes FmWr, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 480 MB with most files being between 1 MB and 1 GB in size. The keywords Adobe and FmWrARCD0163 are typical for these files. The following filename is common: arc.fwd or src.fwd.
All other FWD files (75%) have different formats, often, for example, RTF, Linear and OAWINGEO. Often described as mcassidy, attach, design, blpge, case or lund. Just click the "Choose your .fwd file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your FWD file is.
Technical Data for FWD File Extension
an fwd data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FWD files
- Associate the FWD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest FWD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Engineering Apps update.
- To make sure that your FWD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FWD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
