What is an FWF file?

FWF files mostly belong to TIA Portal. FWF files are firmware files used to update device software. They are not general documents but contain code meant for specific hardware.
For example, one common type is the Siemens HMI Firmware file that is loaded into Siemens systems using the FWF Loader within TIA Portal. More details are available at Siemens support.
Another use case includes firmware updates for network devices. Some FWF files are simple firmware packages (sometimes in a fixed-width field text format), while others are encrypted to protect the update process.

How to open FWF files

You need a suitable software like TIA Portal to open an FWF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FWF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FWF file directly in the browser:. FWF file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The FWF file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in FWF files are:

• 30% of all FWF files use the same file format, which have the signature 03 A1. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 29 KB to 100 MB in size, with a median of 60 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: Template, ----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----, BAQsFADBUMQswCQYDVQQGEwJERTET, MBEGA, MIID, UEChMKU, FirmwareFile and llbWVucyBBRzELMAkGA. A usual file name is CP_15_19_22_V2_V16_0.fwf or KTP700_V14_00_00_00.fwf. Files like these are about mobile and smart.
• 10% of all FWF files start with the bytes 4439, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 47 KB with most files being between 47 KB and 48 KB in size. The file name ar9344_3.41.fwf is characteristic of these files.
