What is a GEF file?

GEF files mostly belong to GEFView. GEF files show up in several forms. The dominant form is a geotechnical data file used with GEFView. It holds information from soil tests, boreholes, and other engineering investigations.
Other uses include:

How to open a GEF file

You need a suitable software like GEFView to open a GEF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The GEF extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in GEF files:

90% of all GEF files are associated with Geotechnical Exchange Format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 4 KB and 170 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as COLUMN, MPa, COLUMNINFO, FILEDATE, PROJECTID, #GEFID= 1, 1, 0 and FILEOWNER. Files like these are sometimes connected to imbro, cptu, diss and dkmp.
4% of all GEF files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 5 KB to 2 MB.
