What is a GMX file?

GMX files mostly belong to BaseCamp by Garmin. A GMX file is a game project created with GameMaker Studio game development environment. The contents of a GMX file are written in Extensible Markup Language (XML). They include project settings and references to scripts, fonts, objects, and media sources (videos, images, sprites, and audio clips) used to develop a game. Another type of GMX file contains a message created by Groupmail email marketing automation software. GMX is also the filename extension of a waypoint created by Garmin GPS devices. BaseCamp can import, edit, and export GMX waypoint files to and from GPS devices.

How to open a GMX file

You need a suitable software like BaseCamp to open a GMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Examples of file names are Advanced UT Engine ORIGINAL.project.gmx. Such GMX files store data about sprite, room, object and game.
• 7% of all GMX files start with the bytes EC DD crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 260 KB in size and range from 180 KB to 730 KB.
