To view or edit GPT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. GPT is not a commonly used file extension and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all GPT files use the popular CAP file format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 2 KB to 4 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MSCF and policies.gpf. These files can be linked to policy and allow.
• 8% of all GPT files start with the bytes G04, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 5 KB with most files being between 400 bytes and 71 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: G04 Layer_Color=255*, Altium Designer, TF.GenerationSoftware,Altium Limited,Altium, %MOIN*%, %FSLAX25Y25*% and SameCoordinates.
