Opening GSV Files
The GSV file type is primarily associated with VisualBoyAdvance.
What is a GSV file?
They are used mainly by game emulators and related tools. For example, Game Boy Advance games use these files to keep track of game states, and tools like VisualBoyAdvance or DeSmuME can load them.
How do you open GSV files?
You need a suitable software like VisualBoyAdvance to open a GSV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GSV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GSV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GSV files:
- VisualBoyAdvance
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GSV files are often referred to as VisualBoyAdvance games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GameShark SP (Gameboy Advance Game Save Info) by Mad Catz, Inc.This file is created by the GameShark SP PC software and is transfered to a Gameboy Advance or Gameboy Advance SP using the game cheat device GameShark SP. Everything needed to transfer the game is included with the GameShark SP.
- GenecystGenecyst is a Sega Genesis system emulator released in 1997. SRAM's are the files which save data about the in-game preset settings or saved games. GSV sram dumps have excactly the same format as the .KSB sram dumps (which are dumped by the Kgen and Kgen98 emulators).
GSV file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the GSV files comes to the following conclusion:
GSV is rarely used as a file extension and includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all GSV files start with the bytes ADVSAVEG, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 9 KB and 33 KB in size. The files contain the following words: ADVSAVEG. A usual file name is mega-man-zero-4.11272.gsv or dragon-ball-z-the-legacy-of-goku-ii.22863.gsv. Files like these have the following tags: mega, battle, zero, network, dragon, ball, legacy and goku.
- 10% of all GSV files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. GSV files can be up to 72 KB in size, but are often around 170 bytes - 54 KB. The files contain the following words: {"ailments":{"current":{},"store":{}},"entities":{"store":{"1":{"context":{"handler":"type","id":"274da41c-63c6-47cb-882e-a9257c10d17d","type":"door","version":"0"},"first_load":true,"id":"1","last_tu and {"entities":{"store":{"1":{"context":{"handler":"type","id":"1f7eef14-3855-4210-81e9-3fcaab444aa7","loot_table":"container_lv1","type":"barrel","version":"0"},"first_load":true,"id":"1","last_turn_tic. The following filename is common: save_data_0.gsv or save_data_2.gsv. Files like these have the following tags: save and data.
The remaining 75% of all GSV files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. zlib, GZIP and GBL. Often described as adventure, advanced or pokemo. If you want to find out what your GSV file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for GSV File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a gsv game save file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GSV files
- Associate the GSV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game save files. Because only the current version supports the latest GSV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available VisualBoyAdvance update.
- To make sure that your GSV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GSV file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
