How can I open a GWS file?
You need a suitable software like D-Link ShareCenter to open a GWS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GWS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GWS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GWS file extension format:
To find out what program is needed to open GWS files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the GWS files:
GWS is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in GWS files:
- 40% of all GWS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "F415" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 26 KB and 28 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Some examples of file names are gateway_settings.gws or gateway_settings (1).gws. Such GWS files store data about settings, gateway and router.
- 25% of all GWS files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The unique Windows component object identifier is 421e6d41-611e-11d1-96f8-0060972d9d5c. The file contains sections GMGuids, GMNorthArrow, GMObjs, GMScaleBar and RAD Draft View Control. The average file size is 600 KB with most files being between 98 KB and 7 MB in size.
All other GWS files (35%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats exist: GateWay Settings and GEOPAK. Files like these are sometimes linked to layer, definition, library or grid. You can get all the details of your GWS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .gws file to analyze" above.
