What is a HEVC file?

HEVC files mostly belong to Movies & TV by Microsoft. HEVC, short for (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a video codec for encoding/decoding high quality videos at lower bitrates. Note that HEVC is not a filename extension. Rather, it is used to compress video content into a multimedia container file such as MOV or MP4. HEVC codec builds upon H.624 codec to provide Ultra High Definition (UHD) videos at up to 8192x4320 resolution with up to 75% data compression. This way, HEVC is able to render high quality videos with smaller file sizes. HEVC also supports High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) Imaging which means higher color gamut for up to 8K resolution. HEVC codec is sometimes called H.265.

How do you open HEVC files?

You need a suitable software like Movies & TV to open a HEVC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HEVC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HEVC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
