All about HPD Files
The HPD file type is primarily associated with PDF viewer.
What is an HPD file
The HPD extension is used in different contexts. It may represent a legal document that uses the PDF format, a file carrying radio scanner data, an HP document built on a Microsoft Compound file, a design file stored as a ZIP archive, or even a 3D model file linked with HPGL plotting data. Understanding the internal format is key to opening the file correctly.
- Legal Document: These files use PDF (HotDocs PDF document) and open with any PDF viewer.
- Radio Scanner Data: Some files serve as radio scanner data linked to HomePatrol-1; use the dedicated software from Uniden to view them.
- HP Document File: A variant uses the Microsoft Compound format and is intended for use with HP LaserJet Document Viewer. More details are available at HP Support.
- Designjet File: Other files use ZIP compression for HP Designjet work and are handled by HP SmartStream Designer. Visit HP for related tools.
- 3D Model Format: A few HPD files relate to 3D models and link to HPGL Plotter Driver data; further information can be found at Drivers.
FilExt.com tip: Match the file type with its corresponding software to view or edit the file properly.

- HotDocs (PDF Document) by Matthew Bender & Company, a member of the LexisNexis GroupHotDocs is a program often used by the legal profession to trasfer documents. It is a variation of PDF. The PDF file created by HotDocs is from a .HPT file. Note that both .HPD and .HFD files do not save the answers like answer files do, but save the form as it appears. Because of this, if you add any further information to these documents, any calculations in the form templates will no longer be carried out. Related links: HotDocs Player

HPD file extension format:
To view or edit HPD files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the HPD files produces the following result:
The HPD file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 45% of all HPD files internally utilize the PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. HPD files can be up to 680 KB in size, but are often around 36 KB - 250 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. These files are often associated with form, authorisation, authority, medicare, petition, probate, client and lease, and usually contain person-related data.
- 20% of all HPD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "TargetModel" at the beginning. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. HPD files can be up to 6 MB in size, but are often around 4 KB - 1 MB. The keywords FormatVersion, TargetModel, BCDx36HP, Conventional, AreaState, StateId, CountyId and AreaCounty are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are s_20180601.hpd or f_20180601.hpd.
All other HPD files (35%) have different formats, the following 5 formats exist: HP Document, ZIP and HPOT. Files like these are sometimes linked to conveyancing or electronic. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your HPD file!
