What is an IDF file?

IDF files mostly belong to ARTiSAN Real-time Studio by ARTiSAN Software Tools. IDF stands for instrument definition file. The IDF file format stores the description of an MIDI instrument and is used by audio production software. MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a technical standard for recording and playing digitally synthesized music. An IDF file is an XML format file that may be used to describe several things, including the components of an instrument defined using a hierarchical structure, the geometric shapes and positions of components, specialized component types, the handling of log files, 'fitting' parameters of instrument profile functions, and choice of preferred coordinate system. Parameters of instrument components may optionally be stored in instrument parameter files, which are also XML files. These files store those instrument parameters that may change on a regular basis. Storing such information outside IDF files allows to keep the size of IDF files small. Storing these parameters in the instrument parameter files also allows to easily locate and change them.

How to open an IDF file

You need a suitable software like ARTiSAN Real-time Studio to open an IDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IDF file directly in the browser:.
