What is an IDML file?

IDML files mostly belong to InDesign by Adobe. An IDML file is a design project created with InDesign page layout design and publishing software. An IDML design is saved as a ZIP-compressed archive. This archive contains documents saved in the XML-based InDesign Markup Language, images and icons, text, and project configuration. Adobe introduced InDesign Markup Language (IDML) in InDesign CS4 as a replacement for the INX format. It has since been used as the default interchange format for designs created with InDesign CS4 and higher. This means that IDML designs created with newer versions of InDesign can be opened by older versions that are CS4 or higher.

How to open IDML files

You need a suitable software like InDesign from Adobe to open an IDML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IDML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IDML file directly in the browser:. IDML file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the IDML files:

IDML is a very common file type and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 96% of all IDML files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one IDML file. 13 to 170 compressed files are common. File names are e.g. designmap.xml, mimetype, \META-INF\container.xml, \META-INF\metadata.xml, \Resources\Fonts.xml, \Resources\Graphic.xml, \Resources\Preferences.xml, \Resources\Styles.xml, \Spreads\Spread_u1.xml, \Stories\Story_u1.xml and \XML\. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. IDML files can be up to 260 MB in size, but are often around 51 KB - 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as designmap.xml and mimetypeapplication/vnd.adobe.indesign-idml-packagePK. These files are often associated with template, vorlage, flyer, brochure, card, guide, poster and business.
• 2% of all IDML files are using the well-known Mac2OSX file format to store the data. The Mac2OSX format is an AppleDouble format and originally used to store additional metadata on Unix systems. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 120 bytes and 1 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Mac OS X, ATTR and IDmDInDn. Files like these have the following tags: urkunde, rollup and roll.
