Opening an IDU File
The IDU file type is primarily associated with Interleaf Document Manager.
What is an IDU file?
In another environment, IDU files are used as Siemens TIA Portal data files. In this context, they contain project configuration or process data to support industrial automation. This variant sometimes works with systems related to CODESYS.
- Interleaf Document File: Stores precise document content and layout instructions.
- TIA Portal Data File: Contains configuration data for automation projects.
If you encounter an IDU file, verify which application created it. Open it with the corresponding tool – a document viewer/editor for Interleaf files or Siemens TIA Portal for automation data – to ensure proper handling and display.
Tip: Check the file properties and origin if uncertainty exists. Use the latest approved software version to avoid misinterpretation of the file’s proprietary structure.
FilExt.com tip: Few users know that these files often utilize highly specialized internal structures that are not accessible with generic text editors, making the dedicated application essential for proper viewing and editing.
How do you open IDU files?
You need a suitable software like Interleaf Document Manager to open an IDU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IDU file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IDU file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert IDU files:
- Interleaf Document Manager
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. IDU files are often referred to as Interleaf Document Manager page layouts because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Interleaf Desktop Utility by BroadVisionA document transfer format.
IDU file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the IDU files looks like this:
IDU is rarely used as a file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all IDU files use the same file format, which have the signature 2E 40. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. IDU files can be up to 600 MB in size, but are often around 330 KB - 140 MB. The file type is very old but is also used today. These files can be linked to sdiopm.
- 15% of all IDU files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "+§9Í" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 3 KB. The keywords source are typical for these files. Such files are related to boolean.
The remaining 15% of all IDU files are files with no common format, often, for example, MAP. If you want to find out which format your IDU file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .idu file to analyze".
Technical Data for IDU File Extension

How to solve problems with IDU files
- Associate the IDU file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest IDU file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Interleaf Document Manager update.
- To make sure that your IDU file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
