To find out what program is needed to open IG files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the IG files looks like this:

IG is rarely used as a file extension and has no uniform or dominant file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 20% of all IG files use the popular PNG file format. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 760 KB to 3 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: IHDR, IDATx, iDOT, sRGB and DeXIfMM. Examples of file names are Image.ig. Such IG files store data about instagram.
• 15% of all IG files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one IG file. An IG file contains 2 to 100 files, the average being 22. The keywords Events and HeaderSr are typical for these files. A common filename is shaya mawn eshbug.ig.
