Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the ILG files:

The ILG file extension is not found very often and covers different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all ILG files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The file contains several sections with names like ID_1_Entries, ID_1_TypeInfo, ID_2_Entries, ID_2_TypeInfo, ID_3_Entries, ID_3_TypeInfo, ID_4_Entries, ID_4_TypeInfo, ID_5_Entries, ID_5_TypeInfo, ID_6_Entries, ID_6_TypeInfo, ISLOG_IDMAP, ISLOG_VERSION_INFO, StrIndex_0, StrIndex_StringTable, StrIndex_hk0, StrIndex_hkStream, ID_1_Index, ID_1_hkIndex and ISGlobalOpTypesTable. ILG files can be up to 25 MB in size, but are often around 65 KB - 1 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. The following filename is common: Setup.ilg.
• 35% of all ILG files belong to Kindle DXG Image Log Gzip. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 7 KB to 190 KB in size. The keywords ImageLink and 03.000 are typical for these files. 20180601a.ilg is a typical file name.
