All about IMP Files
The IMP file type is primarily associated with Tally ERP9.
What is an IMP file?
The IMP extension is used by several specialized applications. It does not have one standard format; instead, its structure is set by the program that creates it. For example, Tally ERP9 uses IMP files to import accounting data, storing text in a UTF-16 (LE) format.
Other uses include:
- Dental CAD/CAM Data: Some IMP files are ZIP-compressed and contain 3Shape Dental System scan data. See the 3Shape website for details.
- GPS Navigation Maps: Certain IMP files hold map data for tools like Hyundai Map Update Tool and CompeGPS Land. More information is available at the Hyundai update page or Twinav.
- Tax Forms: In Hungary, IMP files are used for tax forms with the NAV Online program. More can be learned on the Hungarian Tax System site.
- Project & Report Files: Some design and reporting tools use the extension for logo projects and proprietary reports (e.g. Imagine Logo projects or Prosoft reports from IMPRIMA, supported by Senior Sistemas Gerenciais).
- eBook & Save Files: There are instances where IMP files are part of ebook formats (linked with BOOKDOUG or PalmDOC) or serve as game archive and save files.
- Other Accounting Files: Sage 50, for example, employs IMP files for import operations.
FilExt.com note: Each file’s purpose depends on its originating software. To open an IMP file, use the native application or a tool that handles its specific format.

IMP format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the IMP files:
The IMP file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The file formats most commonly found in IMP files are:
- 20% of all IMP files are based on the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 450 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The following keywords are characteristic: Importing Data from and Importing Data to company. tally.imp is a typical file name.
- 2% of all IMP files use the same file format, which have the signature **************************************************. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 2 KB to 48 KB in size, with a median of 10 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ************, Exporting Data, Exporting Data from Filename, http, xlsxto Tally, Users, Desktop, dreamindia and tallycloud. A usual file name is Tally.imp.
All other IMP files (78%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Softbook eBook, Imp compressed archive, ZIP, Flash, LGF, azon, IBMA and Version. The category is page, info, purchase, receipt, import or data. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your IMP file!
