Opening an IMR File
The IMR file type is primarily associated with IBM Cognos Impromptu.
What is an IMR file
Inertial Measurement Raw Data Files:
Some IMR files contain inertial measurement raw data from sensors, capturing values from inertial measurement units. These files are used in specialized applications for analyzing motion and orientation data.
Key Details compiled by FilExt.com:
FilExt.com note: If the file is a report, use IBM Cognos Impromptu or compatible business intelligence tools. If it contains sensor data, use software designed to process inertial measurement information.
How to open IMR files
You need a suitable software like IBM Cognos Impromptu to open an IMR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IMR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IMR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert IMR files:
- IBM Cognos Impromptu
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. IMR files are often referred to as IBM Cognos Impromptu data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Impromptu (Report Writer Report) by Cognos IncorporatedThe identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00, ASCII: ÐÏ à¡± á .
- IncrediMail (Notifier) by IncrediMail Ltd.
- Information Magic (Data File) by RMA database program designed for school use. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 49 4E 46 4F 52 4D 41 54 49 4F 4E 20 4D 41 47 49 43 0D 0A, ASCII: INFORMATION MAGIC . This file format is classified as Database.
IMR file format:
To view or edit IMR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the IMR files comes to the following conclusion:
IMR is not a common file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all IMR files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). IMR files contain an app name Impromptu or IBM Cognos Impromptu. The unique Windows component object identifier is 1b7d2f01-c4d6-11d2-a4b8-0080c7e30aa0. Sections and streams in the file are named ArmfaaaaAaaaaadaAaaaaaaaGc, Contents, DocumentSummaryInformation, ReportHeader, ReportPreview, SummaryInformation, SnapshotData and SnapshotHeader. IMR files can be up to 340 KB in size, but are often around 37 KB - 92 KB. The file type is relatively new. These files are attributed to address, report, historic, permit and bsns.
- 9% of all IMR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "$IMURAW" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 900 KB to 16 MB in size. The keywords $IMURAW are typical for these files.
The remaining 11% of all IMR files are different files with different signatures. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your IMR file!

an imr compound data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IMR files
- Associate the IMR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compound data files. Because only the current version supports the latest IMR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available IBM Cognos Impromptu update.
- To make sure that your IMR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IMR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
