What is a JDF file?

JDF files mostly belong to Delta by JEOL. JDF is the extension used by a job definition file. The JDF file is a job ticketing (or job intent) file format that has been developed for information exchange in the domain of graphic design. It is an XML format file that is used to describe a printing workflow. A JDF file is extensible; it can either have a rough outline of the job definition or can describe very specific details about the printing workflow. Information can be added to the file as it becomes available, and a typical job description may include number of pages, print quantity, trim page size, inks, required stock, binding type, and cover type. JDF is a vendor-neutral and device-independent format developed by a consortium of companies, including Adobe, Agfa, Heidelberg, and MAN Roland. It is maintained by CIP4. CIP4 stands for the International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress. JDF files can be generated in Adobe Acrobat.

How can I open a JDF file?

You need a suitable software like Delta to open a JDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JDF file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the JDF files looks like this:

JDF is a very common file type and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in JDF files:

• 75% of all JDF files are associated with Jeol JDF format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 290 KB in size and range from 250 KB to 550 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. JEOL.NMR. Such JDF files store data about proton, carbon, single, pulse, dmso, cdcl, sample and teaching.
• 10% of all JDF files are associated with Job Definition Format Job File files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 1 KB and 45 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. JobID, Type, JobPartID, Status, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, DescriptiveName, <JDF xmlns="http://www.CIP4.org/JDFSchema_1_1" and encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no". These files can be linked to print, description, skaff and download.
