Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. JTL is rarely used as a file extension and mainly uses a defined JTL format. The following file formats are most commonly found in JTL files:

• 70% of all JTL files have the same signature timeStamp. These files contain text and words, not binary data. JTL files can be up to 920 MB in size, but are often around 810 bytes - 21 MB. The file type is very recent. The following keywords are characteristic: timeStamp,elapsed,label,responseCode,responseMessage,threadName,dataType,success,failureMessage,bytes,sentBytes,grpThreads,allThreads,URL,Latency,IdleTime,Connect. Some examples of file names are results.jtl. Such files are related to result, hostukor, testresult, report, load and time.
• 15% of all JTL files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 14 KB to 2 MB. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <testResults version="1.2">, httpSample t, false and true are typical for these files. An example of a file name is error.jtl.
