All about KLA Files
The KLA file type is primarily associated with KLA-Tencor.
What is a KLA file?
KLA wafer inspection file: KLA files are used to store specific data from semiconductor inspection systems. They record wafer defect information produced by KLA-Tencor devices. For more details, visit KLA's website.

FilExt.com tip: Each KLA file requires the correct software based on its internal format. Identifying the file’s purpose is key to opening and viewing the data correctly.
How to open a KLA file
You need a suitable software like KLA-Tencor to open a KLA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KLA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KLA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert KLA files:
- KLA-Tencor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. KLA files are often referred to as KLA-Tencor data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- KLARFFKLARFF is a form of semiconductor mapping often used to map defects in a wafer. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 46 69 6C 65 56 65 72 73 69 6F 6E 20, ASCII: FileVersion.
KLA file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the KLA files comes to the following conclusion:
KLA is not a common file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in KLA files:
- 40% of all KLA files are KLARFF map-data files. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 230 KB. The keywords FileTimestamp, InspectionStationID, SampleType WAFER;, ResultTimestamp, LotID, FileVersion 1 7;, SampleSize and TiffSpec 6.0 NA R; are typical for these files.
- 25% of all KLA files start with the magic bytes KLZIPv0, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 40 KB to 84 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. KLZIPv0, EPIC and STEAM. A common filename is AppData.kla.
All other KLA files (35%) have no uniform format. If you want to find out which format your KLA file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .kla file to analyze".
Technical Data for KLA File Extension
a kla data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with KLA files
- Associate the KLA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest KLA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available KLA-Tencor update.
- To make sure that your KLA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .KLA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
