What is a KST file?

KST files mostly belong to KstPlot2.

The KST file extension is used in several very different settings. It is not a single file type, but a label adopted by various applications.

• Data analysis file: Often a XML-based file used by applications like KstPlot2, storing measurement or experiment data.
• Cost estimate document: In some cases a KST file holds a Polish construction cost estimate, created by programs from NORMA kosztorys.
• Instrument configuration: A KST file may be a Keithley KickStart file. These files use a ZIP format and are related to settings or configuration data for measurement instruments (see Tek).
• Security identity store: Some KST files are KeyStore Identity files. They contain secure key data and are managed with tools like KeyStore Explorer.
• Game data container: Certain KST files are used by games like Knight Online to store game data. In these cases, the file may also be linked with Kingsoft spreadsheet applications.
• Word processing document: On occasion, a KST file is a Korean word processor document saved in Microsoft Compound file format and can be opened with Microsoft Office Word (Word).

When you see a KST file, inspect its contents to decide which program is right for it. If it begins with XML tags, it is likely the data analysis file; if it appears compressed, it might be the instrument configuration file; and if it uses a compound format, a word processor or similar application is needed.

How to open KST files

You need a suitable software like KstPlot2 to open a KST file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open KST files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. • 55% of all KST files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. KST files can be up to 50 KB in size, but are often around 490 bytes - 1 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and <kml xmlns="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:gx="http://www.google.com/kml/ext/2.2" xmlns:kml="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org. Files like these are sometimes connected to google, earth, data, location, sites, list, coordinates and cabinet.
• 20% of all KST files start with the magic bytes NORMA-, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 20 KB to 130 KB in size. The keywords NORMA and KOSZTORYS are typical for these files. These files are attributed to kosztorys, remont and korzenna.

All other KST files (25%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats can be found: ZIP and DOC. Files like these are sometimes linked to keystore, transfer, client, template, setting, points, point, area, info, note, site or well.
