Opening LWL Files
The LWL file type is primarily associated with BarTender.
What is an LWL file?
Label Design for BarTender/Teklynx:
How to open LWL files
You need a suitable software like BarTender to open an LWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LWL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LWL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert LWL files:
- BarTender
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LWL files are often referred to as BarTender data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Lightwright (Printed Paperwork Formatting Instructions) by John McKernon SoftwareLightwright is a cross between a spreadsheet and a database, designed specifically to manage professional lighting design paperwork. This file format is classified as Database.
LWL file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the LWL files comes to the following conclusion:
Files with the LWL extension are quite widely used. This file type mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all LWL files start with the bytes 02 00 01 00, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 4 KB and 51 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Default Label Template. These files are often associated with label, shipment, calix, print, acad, case, pack, shipping, amazon, master, bulk and fedx.
- 25% of all LWL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Dymo DLS Label File." at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. LWL files are between 720 bytes and 44 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Dymo DLS Label File and Address. Files like these have the following tags: address, barcode, specimen, code and visitor.
The remaining 5% of all LWL files are files with no common format, often e.g. config. The category is panneau, template, venturelabel, generic, pallet, rdassy, bopis, assy, sscc or unit. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your LWL file!

How to solve problems with LWL files
- Associate the LWL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open label design files. Because only the current version supports the latest LWL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available BarTender update.
- To make sure that your LWL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LWL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
