Opening an MBP File
The MBP file type is primarily associated with Mobipocket Reader.
What is an MBP file?
- Main Use: Mobipocket (owned by Amazon) is associated with developing the widely popular HTML based e-book format MOBI. Mobipocket created MBP files to store highlights/annotations information found within eBooks. The MBP file in itself is very small (around 1 Kb) and saves annotations, highlights, and other notes that are automatically created when a MOBI or AZW eBook file is opened on Amazon Kindle devices. The MBP gets auto-updated as the user reads the eBook and is stored in the same directory as that of the eBook file with the eBook's file name. The MBP file is a metadata file and cannot be considered as an eBook file in itself.
- Other Uses: MBP file extension is also used as a disk burning project file by Medialink, a multimedia authoring and CD/DVD burning application developed by CyberLink. The MBP project file contains a set of video snippets and transition effects. It does not contain any real multimedia data but only references to external multimedia. The MBP project file can be edited and burned onto optical discs using CyberLink MediaShow software on Windows PCs. MBP file extension is also linked to another CD/DVD burning tool MAGIX Speed developed by MAGIX. The MBP CD/DVD burning project files consist of an XML-like set of all files and folders meant for burning onto an optical disk. These MBP files are saved by default in the My Documents\MAGIX Projects sub-directory.

MBP file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the MBP files:
An MBP file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in MBP files are:
- 20% of all MBP files store the data in the SQL file format. An SQL file contains a lightweight SQLite database, widely used in application development for storing application related data. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 700 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The files contain the following words: SQLite format 3. The file name 020000000000.mbp is typical for these files.
- 15% of all MBP files internally utilize the JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 120 bytes in size and range from 120 bytes to 11 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as guid, kindle, payload, records, type, location and most_recent_read. Such files sometimes refer to book and ebok.
All other MBP files (65%) have no consistent format, the following 7 formats can be found: ZIP, BPARMOBI and PAR. Often described as asin, type, software, popela or pons.
