What is a MENC file?

MENC files mostly belong to Windows Mobile by Microsoft. MENC stands for Mobile Encrypted file. MENC file format is used as an encrypted file in Windows mobiles.

  • Main Use: MENC files are seen in external memory storage devices on Windows mobile devices. MENC files are used to store an encrypted copy of the original data along with an added header. MENC files enhance data security ensuring the privacy of personal data.
  • Additional Information: The filename of the MENC files consists of a GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) section and bear the file name [filename].[ext].[GUID].menc. The GUID section of the filename is linked to the mode of encryption used on the file data. Changing the GUID will make it very difficult to decrypt the data in the MENC file. When an external memory card with encrypted MENC file data is inserted into a Windows mobile device, the GUID of the file is cross-checked with the GUID of the device, and decryption takes place only if there is a match. When the GUIDs are the same, the decryption takes place almost instantaneously and the MENC file extension is no longer seen. This is the only way to decrypt the MENC files.
